LOVE

Devotional

by Corey Benko, Discovery Resident

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.” Psalm 22:1-2

400 years. That is how much time passed between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament. This time is often referred to as “The 400 Years of Silence”. It was called this, because no one heard from God that whole time. Not a prophet or priest, not a king or a farmer, not a single person heard from Him. Despite the silence God was not absent.

God was working throughout all that time. The Roman empire did great things as well bad things. One of the great things God used the Romans for was building an infrastructure like nothing the world had ever seen. It was this interconnectedness of roads and ship routes that allowed the Gospel of Jesus Christ to spread like wildfire and Israel had no idea God was doing this. Silence does not mean absence.

In our lives, sometimes God is silent. I wish I could say that God is never silent and that it is just us not listening; which does happen. However, sometimes God chooses to be silent. His silence does not mean He is absent or that He isn’t working. One of the best things to do when He is silent to be honest with him as David was in Psalms 22. Then write out God’s faithfulness in the past. Take at least 5 minutes and write out everything you have to be thankful for right now and thank God for each one aloud.
